On May 2023, I finally got the possiblity to attend the Kalman Filter course organized by Dr. Grewal. It has been a great opportunity to refresh my knowledge on Kalman Filtering and also getting insights on some modern techniques related to it.
This course was an invaluable option to refresh foundational knowledge on State Estimation Theory but also to learn ore about advancements in that field. As a GN&C Engineer currently collaborating with Lockheed Martin Human Space Flight Center and the NAS Johnson Space Center, the Kalman Filter is not just a powerful tool I've learned about during my University courses, but also a core component of my day-to-day tasks.
For someone who has spent much of her professional life immersed in state estimation, control theory, and guidance systems, this course was not only an excellent opportunity to refresh foundational knowledge—it also provided an exciting window into new advancements and applications in the field. As a GN&C (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) engineer working on the NASA Orion capsule, Kalman filtering is not just a tool I’ve learned about academically—it is a core component of my daily professional responsibilities.
The following is a testimonial from Dr. Grewal regarding my attendance at his lecture:
"Dr. Alexis Benini took my short course “Application of Kalman Filtering to GPS, INS, & Navigation” in May 2023. She was very much involved in the course, asked good questions, and discussed the material in great length. She had a solid background that allowed her to fully comprehend the material.
I teach this course twice each year with different groups each time. However, I remember Dr. Benini very well because of her intense interest in the material. She was eager to learn and apply the material. She was conscientious and hardworking—an outstanding professional.
I recommend her for a position in any demanding engineering field."
